Free Crochet Pattern: Butterfly – Crochet for Children

The butterfly is crocheted with Shamrock Yarns 100% Cotton 8/4, which is made of 100% cotton.

Size

The butterfly measures 5x7cm

Materials

• Crochet hook size 3.50mm
• Darning needle for finishing
• (Possibly) stitch markers and row counter

Yarn consumption

Shamrock Yarns 100% Cotton 8/4

• Shamrock yarns 100% cotton – 8/4, colour 09 – navy blue, 2 grams
• Shamrock yarns 100% cotton – 8/4, colour 11 – dusty light turquoise, 2 grams
• Shamrock yarns 100% cotton – 8/4, colour 27 – light blue, 2 grams

Abbreviations

dc - double crochet

ch - chain stitches

sl st - slip stitch

tr - treble stitch

dtr – double treble stitch

Instructions

Start with navy blue - no 09

• Make 10 chain stitches and join them with a sl st

• Begin the round by making 2 ch (counts as a tr), 2 tr, of 2 ch
• Make 3 tr, 2 ch x7

• When the round is finished, you will have 8x3 tr
• Finish the round with a sl st in ch from the beginning of the round, change to light blue for sl st

You crochet this round in the chain space from the previous round.

• Make 3 tr, 1 ch, 3 tr x8

Finish the round with a sl st in the first tr, change to dusty light turquoise in the sl st

You crochet the last round as shells, where you crochet all treble stitches in the same stitch.

You make the treble stitches in ch between the 2x3 tr.

• 4 tr, 1 dtr, 4 tr - sl st between the next group of treble stitches x8

Once you are all the way around, you finish with a sl st. Leave a long tail (approx. 50cm)

Weave in the 3 ends on the left side of the picture. Leave the long turquoise colour and the navy blue colour.

Fold the crocheted ’flower’ in the middle to make it look like a butterfly.

Take the yarn strand from the ch-row and use this to gather the middle of the butterfly.

Sew through a few times, weave in the end and cut the yarn.

The last navy blue strand you bring down to the bottom of the butterfly, sew around the ch-row a couple of times, weave in the end, and cut the yarn.

Now, you sew the sides of the butterfly together. Take the long turquoise strand and bring it to the top of the wing.

Sew through the stitches along the wings. Once you reach the middle on the bottom, you insert the needle through the seams of the navy blue colour.

Continue sewing the stitches together on the butterfly's other wing.

Weave in the ends and cut the yarn.
