What type of yarn is best for dishcloths?

If you are completely new to knitting or crochet - or maybe just want to try out a simple new project - then you can try making some dishcloths. Note, however, that not all types of yarn are equally suitable for making dishcloths.

To make it a little easier for you, we have listed a few tips below that you can use to pick out exactly the type of yarn you prefer that is suitable for making dishcloths.

What you should look for:

  • It is important that the yarn has been made to be strong so that does not have a tendency to unravel, as this will quickly make your dishcloths look shabby.
  • The yarn must be able to absorb water well.
  • The yarn must be able to withstand washing at at least 60 degrees, as dishcloths are a breeding ground for bacteria, so it is important that the yarn is able to withstand high temperatures.
  • Once you have crocheted/knitted your dishcloth, the yarn should also be able to keep its shape after washing. This naturally also depends on the pattern you choose to use for your dishcloth.

Cotton is always a good choice

You can probably find several types of yarn that are quite suitable for dishcloths, but cotton yarn is always one of the best choices when it comes to crocheting or knitting dishcloths. Cotton yarn meets all the requirements listed above, and you can find it in many different yarn qualities and colours.
