What type of yarn is best for jumpers?

When you want to knit or crochet a jumper, you should always consider what specific properties you want the jumper to have before choosing the yarn. What type of yarn you use for your jumper does make a difference.

If you are a little unsure about which yarn to choose for your jumper, then read on here below where we have presented a number of yarn types, which are all, in their own way, well suited for making jumpers.

Alpaca yarn

As the name suggests, alpaca yarn is made from the wool from the alpaca, which normally lives in South America. The structure of the yarn is reminiscent of sheep wool, but it is much warmer and more durable than sheep wool generally is.

Alpaca yarn is therefore more than ideal to use when you want to make a nice jumper that will be able to keep you warm in the cold winter months.

Bamboo yarn

Bamboo yarn is made with the fibres from the bamboo plant. It is therefore a natural material, which is a great advantage if you have difficulty tolerating synthetic fibres. The bamboo fibres give the yarn a nice and shiny look, which will add a touch of elegance to your design when you use it to knit or crochet a jumper.

Bamboo yarn is best suited for knitting or crocheting cardigans or light summer jumpers, as it is not very thick.

Cotton yarn

Cotton yarn is one of the most widely used yarn types in the UK - and for good reason. Cotton yarn is light and soft to wear, which makes it an obvious choice for when you are knitting summer clothes.

So if you wish to knit a light cardigan for the summer evenings rather than a thick, warm winter jumper, then cotton yarn is the perfect yarn for the purpose.

Mohair yarn

Mohair yarn is a relatively exclusive type of yarn that many people prefer to use for knitting and crochet. Quality mohair yarn is very soft and it is therefore a wonderful choice for a jumper.

Additionally, mohair yarn is insulating and warming in the winter, and at the same, cooling and breathable in the summer heat. You will therefore be able to use your mohair jumper all year round.

Wool yarn

Wool yarn is usually made from sheep's wool, and it is one of the most frequently used yarn types for knitting/crocheting lovely, warm winter jumpers. This is because wool is good at regulating heat and transporting moisture away from the body, and it is also relatively airy compared to many other types of yarn.

In addition, wool yarn is relatively dirt-repellent and does not tend to smell easily. This means that you do not have to wash your wool jumper anywhere near as often as you would with other types of yarn. Yet, always remember to pay attention to the washing instructions for your wool yarn, so you avoid the risk of shrinking it in the wash.
