What is acrylic yarn and what is it made from?

Acrylic yarns are artificially made yarns and are therefore often cheaper than yarns made from natural fibers. Acrylic often has a longer yarn length than other yarns of equal thickness, as it is a lightweight material.

The acrylic yarn was previously known to be stiff and scratchy, but new technologies are now beginning to change that. Today, acrylic yarns come in many designs and various degrees of softness. Today, it will usually feel a bit like the Superwash-treated merino wool. The benefit of acrylic being synthetic is that it is colorfast and will therefore not stain much. Additionally, you will find that acrylic yarn is often available in a multitude of colors.

Some people swear by acrylic yarn and feel it is the only type of yarn they want to knit and crochet with, while others prefer not to work with it. Those who do not like it often use the argument that it lacks breathability. Those who love it mention benefits such as being able to wash it again and again without problems, and that it keeps its shape well and is hypoallergenic.

Acrylic yarn is great for beginners as it is easy to work with and inexpensive to use for practice. You can use it for both knitting and crochet. Acrylic yarn is often used for larger home décor items such as pillows and blankets, as well as clothing for people who do not tolerate wool. Many also use it for making stuffed toys and dolls.
