Shoulder Seams

When you knit a jumper, the process will often be divided into several parts. Usually, the body, the back and 2 sleeves. Once you have made all the parts individually, you finish by sewing them all together, and this is where you will need to know about shoulder seams. The seams are the point at which the individual pieces are sewn together at the top.

Most people choose to use invisible shoulder seams to make the stitching as discreet as possible.

How do I sew invisible shoulder seams?

You place the front and back pieces with the right sides up and the wrong side out. That way, you can turn the jumper out afterwards, and the seams will then be on the inside.

You can follow these 4 steps for sewing invisible shoulder seams:

  1. Sew the 2 pieces together with staggered stitches
  2. Start by attaching the strand to the one-knit piece
  3. Insert the needle from below and through a stitch on the outer edge
  4. Then insert the needle down and around the outer stitch on the other piece, and pull the needle back through the same stitch on the other piece.

Be sure to use the same type of yarn that you used for knitting your jumper. If you want the stitches to be as invisible as possible, you need to do the seams with the same knitting tension that you used for knitting the jumper.

You can use the same seaming technique for closing the toe on a pair of knitted socks.

Which type of needle should I use for shoulder seams?

If you use a regular sewing needle, your seaming project will take a long time. You will need a darning needle that has been specifically designed for the purpose. They are available in different sizes and lengths.

The great thing about the darning needle is that they do not have pointed ends and their eyes are larger. This allows you to easily and smoothly pull the needle and yarn through the stitches on each side of the back and the front piece.
