Casings

When sewing bags or other types of products that you close using a type of drawstring, you will be working with casings. A casing is a hollow fold where you pull a type of drawstring that is used to close an opening on a bag or pouch. Casings are super practical as you can make them with many different types of fabric.

How do I sew a casing?

It is easy and simple to sew your own fabric pouch that you can use for workout clothes, storage at home or for packing your lunch for work.

You can make your own fabric pouch in less than an hour, and the casing is the primary task. When you are making your pouch, be sure to make a double-layer fold of the two pieces of fabric (remember to turn the wrong side of the fabric inward). You thereby make a 'passage' where you pull the drawstring through, which you can also use as a bag strap.

When you are sewing a casing, remember to adjust the width according to the type of cord you have chosen as your drawstring.

What types of cord can you use as drawstrings?

You should use a thick, firm and durable cord for your fabric pouches. The cord must be able to withstand continuous pulling and tugging. Heavy cotton cord or anorak cord are some of the most ideal cords for the purpose.

In addition to gym bags and fabric pouches, casings are also used for sewing simple skirts that have an elastic at the waist. For this purpose, you should use a wide elastic that can provide the optimal flexibility for when you put the skirt on. Once you have mastered sewing casings, you can make little pouches for everything from sunglasses and electronics to water bottles. It is a simple and easy way to make closures that can be used for many fun and practical sewing projects.
