What is effect Yarn?

In short, effect yarn is a category of yarn. If you are following a pattern that prescribes the use of two strands together, the thinnest of these two will often be categorised as an effect yarn.

To further explain, an effect yarn is a yarn that you knit together with your base yarn in order to give the finished project a more variegated or fluffy look, depending on the specific yarn quality. The effect yarn should preferably not affect your knitting tension, but instead allow you to create a different expression for your knitting project without having to change your base yarn.

Today, the most popular effect yarn is undoubtedly mohair - both by itself, but also mixed with silk. It gives your projects a nice and ‘fluffy’ surface and a beautiful 'mohair halo'. You can also find effect yarn with glitter, in linen, silk or the like, if you want to create something more exclusive and nice - or if you just want to mix your own yarn quality.
