Abbreviations

Rw - Row

Ch – Chain stitch

Dc – Double crochet

Tr – Treble

sl st - slip stitch

Frtr – Front relief treble (a treble stitch that is crocheted in front of the treble from the previous round)

Pattern & tension

The pattern is called Alpine Stitch and is made by alternately crocheting a first st around the treble stitch from the last tr-round and then crocheting a regular tr in the dc from the previous round. Then crochet a whole row exclusively with dc.

Then crochet another round with alternating frtr and dc; this time you just crochet the frtr first. This way, the Alpine Stitch pattern will start to form.

The crochet tension is 10x10 cm = 9 frtr straight ahead and 8 frtr upwards.

My finished piece measures approx. 117cmx68cm. (before folding/sewing)

Instructions

You crochet with double strand!

Start by making 200 ch and turn with 1 ch – the turning chains do not count as a stitch

Rw. 1. 1 dc in each turn with 2 ch

Rw. 2. 1 tr in each turn with 1 ch

Next thing is the pattern itself

Rw. 3. 1 dc in each tr and turn with 2 ch

Rw. 4.*1 frtr over tr from the previous round, 1 tr in the next dc* Repeat for the rest of the row and turn with 1 ch

Rw. 5. 1 dc in each tr and turn with 2 ch

Rw. 6. *1 tr in the first dc, 1 frtr in the next tr from the previous round* Repeat for the rest of the row and turn with 1 ch

Repeat rw. 3-6 until you have crocheted a total of 10 rows with frtr – the last row is crocheted like rw. 6

  • Crochet a rw. with dc and turn with 2 ch
  • Crochet 1 tr in each dc and turn with 2 ch
  • *Crochet 1 tr in each tr and turn with 2 ch*

Repeat this row *-* until you have crocheted 15 rows with tr and turn with 1 ch (crochet the last row from the right side)

Now, the Alpine Stitch starts again - this can also be omitted; so if you do not want the pattern in the middle,  just continue crocheting 1 tr in each tr until the whole tr piece measures approx. 42cm.

  • Crochet 1 rw. with 1 dc in each tr and turn with 2 ch
  • Crochet *1 frtr over tr from the previous round, 1 tr in the next dc* Repeat for the rest of the row and turn with 1 ch
  • Crochet 1 dc in each tr and turn with 2 ch
  • Crochet *1 tr in the first dc, 1 frtr in the next tr from the previous round* Repeat for the rest of the row and turn with 1 ch

Repeat until you have crocheted 5 rw. with frtr, finish with a row of dc and turn with 2 ch

  • Now, crochet 1 tr in each dc and turn with 2 ch.

Repeat this row until you have crocheted 15 rows with tr and turn with 1 ch. (crochet the last row from the right side)

Then Alpine Stitch starts again

  • Crochet 1 rw. with 1 dc in each tr and turn with 2 ch
  • Crochet *1 frtr over tr from the previous round, 1 tr in the next dc* Repeat for the rest of the row and turn with 1 ch
  • Crochet 1 dc in each tr and turn with 2 ch
  • Crochet *1 tr in the first dc, 1 frtr in the next tr from the previous round* Repeat for the rest of the row and turn with 1 ch

Repeat until you crocheted 10 rw with frtr and cut the yarn and weave in. You can also choose to crochet dc or sl st all the way around the work to give the work a nicely finished edge

Weave in all ends.

Measure approx. 19cm. on one side and fold the piece. Now sew it together both at the top and bottom to form a "long" pocket.

Do the same on the other side.

Then sew "small pockets" on the long pockets. Take your yarn and your needle and sew in your desired pocket size; I formed my pockets from the alpine stitch pattern and the treble stitch pattern.

Measure the strings as you go to make sure they fit your project in size.
